Wood Processors’ and Manufacturers’ Association of New Zealand
What we do
Advocacy, Lobbying and Government Representation
It's not feasible for every company to maintain a strong and regular relationship with Ministers, Government departments, and other officials. What's more, Government responds keenly to statements of united industry position, as compared to the position of an individual company. Members see this as our main way of achieving the WPMA purpose. We need to set the agenda and the environment around us using evidence-based advocacy. There is a strong feeling that this advocacy be channelled to the highest levels of national and local government and forest-growing company management.
WPMA, with an Executive office located in central Wellington, has a strong voice with Government. Our Member’s shape the policy which we then put forward.
As a WPMA member, you have the ability to put your concerns to Government with the weight of the bulk of the processing and manufacturing industry behind them, rather than the concerns of only one firm.
We need to be on top of standards. Not just those relating to timber treatment and grading and construction (i.e. NZS, SOPs) but those that impact export trade by acting as tariff/non-tariff barriers and private standards coming over the horizon (e.g. Life Cycle Analysis). This is a significant work area also covering the TQS, FSC and PEFC.
WPMA releases a regular newsletter, which informs you of events and issues arising in the industry. We carry guest columns from Government and industry leaders as well as the Frame & Truss Manufacturers Association of NZ.
As a WPMA member, you will receive these regular updates, as well as have the ability to communicate via us to other members of the industry, suppliers, and purchasers.
WPMA Official Launch was held on 4 September 2014 followed by regional meetings throughout the country plus ForestWood Conferences and NZ Wood-Resene Timber Design Awards.
WPMA Wellington office - is located at 32 Salamanca Road, Kelburn, in the Botanical Gardens . We also have WPMA Branches in Nelson (Debbie Fergie, Promotions Manager) & Rotoura (Jeff Parker, Technical Manager) .
As a WPMA member, you will have regular opportunities to network with industry leaders across the entire forestry industry, from planting and harvesting to processing, treating, and manufacturing.
The NZ Wood Promotional programme, funded through Woodco, counts WPMA as a founding member.
WPMA run these prestigious NZ Wood Resene Timber Design Awards to showcase examples of timber design excellence!
This is New Zealand’s only Timber Design award event and allows engineers, architects, architectural designers and builders to showcase innovation using timber.
Both local and international companies will be looking to NZ for timber design inspiration in 2018.
